What happens on trekking day
The day starts early with a transfer to park headquarters for registration and a ranger briefing. Visitors are assigned to a gorilla family, with fitness and mobility considered where possible. After driving to the trailhead, trackers and rangers lead the group through farmland edges and forest until the gorillas are found.
The approach can take anywhere from less than an hour to several hours because the gorillas move freely. Once the family is located, the viewing period is strictly controlled. You may watch adults feeding, mothers caring for infants, juveniles playing and a silverback monitoring the group. Rangers manage positioning and explain the family’s behavior.
How difficult is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Difficulty changes every day. Altitude, mud, steep ground and the gorillas’ location all affect the hike. Travelers with reasonable fitness usually complete the trek, but no operator can promise an easy route. Train with regular hill walking, arrive well rested and tell your guide about mobility concerns before family allocation.
Hiring a porter is strongly recommended. A porter can carry your daypack and provide a steady hand on slippery sections. The service also creates direct local income around the park.
When to go
Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year. June to September and mid-December to February generally provide firmer trails and are the busiest periods. Rules that protect the gorillas
Mountain gorillas are vulnerable to human respiratory illness. Follow the ranger’s current distancing and mask instructions, keep voices low, never use flash, do not eat near the gorillas and carry all waste out. If you are unwell, inform the operator before the trek; entering the forest while sick can place the gorillas at risk.
How many days do you need?
Three days is the practical minimum: arrive and transfer north, trek on the second day, then return to Kigali on the third. Four days allows a Kigali visit, golden monkeys or a conservation experience without rushing. With six to ten days, add Akagera National Park, Lake Kivu or Nyungwe National Park.
